1. Put the application date on your plan
The BACB says the new certification requirements begin January 1, 2027. To have an application reviewed under the 2022 requirements, it must receive the complete application, payment, and required documents by December 31, 2026. Finishing a course or your last fieldwork hour is not the same milestone as submitting a complete application. Read the BACB announcement.
Build your plan backward from the application: list every document, who supplies it, and when you expect it. Leave room to resolve missing information. If the timeline is uncertain, take that uncertainty into your next conversation with your advisor and supervisor instead of treating December completion as a guarantee.
2. Ask your program to review the actual coursework
Under the 2027 requirements, BCBA applicants have two routes: an eligible accredited or recognized degree program, or behavior-analytic coursework through Pathway 2. For Pathway 2, both the degree and the coursework must satisfy minimum calendar-duration rules. The coursework totals 315 instructional hours, with specified freestanding courses; the total alone is not enough. Check the BACB’s 2027 requirements, pages 1–3.
Bring your transcript and course information to your program contact. Ask for a written account of which requirements your completed courses satisfy, what remains, and whether any additional course is available in time. A program’s historical exam pass rate cannot answer those questions.

3. Review the records behind your fieldwork total
The BACB transition guide recommends planning for both sets of requirements if your application date is uncertain. It also recommends completing both versions of the monthly verification forms with your supervisor when you meet both standards. An older observation record may not show the duration needed for 2027. Track observation counts and minutes, and preserve the records needed to support each month. Read the transition guide, pages 2–4.
For 2027, the fieldwork summary specifies 2,000 hours with 5% supervision for Supervised Fieldwork, or 1,500 hours with 7.5% supervision for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. Monthly accrual is 20–160 hours, and client-observation requirements are 60 or 90 cumulative minutes respectively. These are selected requirements, not a complete eligibility checklist. Ask your supervisor to review one actual month with you: the activities, supervision, observations, and forms. Then identify any records that need attention across the rest of your history. When evaluating fieldwork trackers, ask the provider to demonstrate how it records observation duration and exports the documentation you need. A reassuring total on a dashboard is only useful when you can trace it back to its evidence.
Your next step: one meeting, three decisions
Bring a proposed application date, your coursework record, and a sample fieldwork month to your advisor and supervisor. Leave with a list of unresolved requirements, a person responsible for each answer, and a date to revisit the plan.
